Carl Bernard Mack was born in Jackson , Miss. He is a graduate of Mississippi State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 1986 and was named a Distinguished Engineering Fellow in 2006.

After moving to the Seattle, Wash., area in 1987, Mack worked as an engineer with METRO - King County for 18 years and coordinated the county's award-winning Minority Engineering Internship Program. In addition, he served as president of the Seattle King County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 2003 through 2004.

On March 1, 2005, Mack began a new chapter of his life as the fourth executive director of the largest student-managed organization in the world, the National Society of Black Engineers.

Mack has proven his acumen as a leader throughout his professional career. During his first year at NSBE, a $9-million organization, it reached an all-time high paid membership of more than 19,000, eclipsing the previous mark of 12,800. NSBE has also seen its Board of Corporate Affiliates - the organization's top-level sponsors - expand from 40 members to a record number of 52 during his tenure.
