Culturally Responsive Teaching in the Engineering Classroom and Beyond: Igniting Concrete, Equitable Change

  • Is culturally responsive education important or compelling to you?

  • Do you care to see the status quo, with respect to power and privilege, radically shift in the engineering arena?

  • Have you witnessed great disparities/stratification in opportunity and achievement for those systemically minoritized in engineering, but aren’t sure how to act to counter the inequities, or target some of the root problems?

  • Do you puzzle over how engineering classes are taught, or what content is highlighted, but struggle with how to move (or advocate) for concrete, equitable solutions?

  • Are you wondering about how to engage engineering faculty on a path of literacy with culturally responsive teaching?

  • Are you looking for language, ideas, and tools to ignite concrete, equitable change in engineering classrooms and beyond?

In this experiential webinar, Dr. Affolter will address the above questions (and beyond) about pedagogical and educational inequities in the engineering realm with an eye towards solutions. The webinar will build both a theoretical foundation to inequities in STEM education, as well as offer guidance on how to make change. Dr. Affolter’s guidance stems from experience with evaluation and consulting in the national STEM equity arena from the University of Washington’s Center for Evaluation & Research for STEM Equity, as well as offering on-the-ground professional development with teachers (first grade through graduate school) to understand and dismantle inequity. As a white person, Emily’s orientation to this work is steeped in a critique of white supremacy as it permeates education, and she offers tools to understand and dismantle white dominance among other forms of hegemony in engineering education.

Dr. Emily Alicia Affolter is the director of, and faculty for Prescott College's Ph.D. program in Sustainability Education. The program is focused on the nexus of environmental and social justice as pertaining to education. Dr. Affolter has experience in program evaluation, consulting, and facilitating interventions to advance and bolster diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM-related workplaces, academic environments, and beyond. As a passionate educator, Emily has taught ages 4-72 in a variety of classrooms, both in the U.S. and abroad. Emily earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Multicultural Education from the University of Washington. Her most current research interests explore culturally responsive interventions for teachers, students, and leaders.
